Just came across this really well written article by Allyn Hane on the Walmart Blog (did you know Walmart had a blog? me either). Allyn makes some really good suggestions on how Walmart can use their blog to promote sales and build goodwill. If you have a business blog you can learn from Allyn’s innovative suggestions.
I agree that as currently structured http://checkoutblog.com is pretty useless to Walmart. It is clearly showing signs of neglect with only one post in 2010 so far from the over a dozen listed authors. However the Walmart blog can be really useful to us as writers because:
1. It is PR5 – yes PR5 and since the blog has been around since 2007 I bet that PR5 sticks.
2. They blog about all kinds of topics from home and garden, to gaming to tax software.
3. The comment policy states: (emphasis mine)
“We know you’ve got plenty to say. On this blog, we encourage dialogue about the products discussed by the writers. We welcome your thoughts and opinions on any and all of those topics.
A few notes:
The first time you leave a comment, editors will have to approve it for posting. We do that to ensure that you’re not a machine. During the week, first time moderation will typically occur within 24 hours (we don’t work weekends).
Personal attacks and foul language = not tolerated. Adding to the discussion = encouraged.
Stay on-topic. Off-topic comments will be removed from the thread.
Comments revealing personal information (e.g. place of residence, personal history) about bloggers or other commenters will be removed
Comments should contribute to the dialogue. Please support any claims with links to sources whenever possible. We love opinions. We love it even more when you back them up.”
So not only can you link your name (or some nice keyword) but you can drop links to sources like… oh …an ehow article or review you write of some product.
4. The last post says: ”I’m going to look at doing this quick style post more often. If there’s something you want to see covered, let us know by posting a question, comment or concern.”
If they actually do that you could pretty much ask for a post to match your content setting you up for a great comment opportunity. If you phrase your comment as a question you could create a link to anything remotely related to stuff Walmart sells.
5. The Walmart blog seems to accept trackbacks. Trackbacks to your blog from a PR5 blog can be really helpful.
I hope this helps you link builders out there, and thanks to http://bloggerillustrated.net (linked from Master Dayton’s blog roll – thanks Master Dayton) for pointing out the Walmart Blog. Happy linking.
